Sara Bareilles – Lie To Me

Sara Bareilles is an incredible musician. There’s no going around it. Her combination of soulful vocals and masterful piano-playing make her a really special artist. I’ve already expressed my love for this California songstress before. When I heard her cover Otis Redding’s Dock of the Bay, I was beyond impressed. But then I also heard her do a piano cover of Coldplay’s Yellow, and that was it for me. I thus became a Sara Bareilles fan, and can’t none ya’ll tell me otherwise. Her upcoming album, Once Upon Another Time, is set for release real soon, on May 22nd. And what’s even better is that the main producer behind this latest project is none other than Ben Folds. She was nice enough to hook us up with a few tracks in advance.

This particular song, Lie To Me, sounds like it came from a really deep place. Written in a heartfelt yet profoundly scornful way, Sara confronts a lying lover, and holds no punches in the process. While she reveals a vulnerability, lines like “run your mouth, I bet I can catch it” make it clear that she is not one to be fucked with. Her piano keys resonate, accompanied by high strings which add to the song’s intense nature. If this is any indication of what her album will sound like, then folks, I’d say we’re gonna have ourselves a damn fine piece of work.

Notable Quotables:
.
Tell the truth, no lies, I can take it
Branded by justice once
Run your mouth, I bet I can catch it
You sound just like a Judas
.
And if there’s anything I learned
That’ll keep me standing
It’s to take you and your words
And I’m empty-handed
A tongue like yours should be burned and branded
So I can see you lie to me
.
I wish the air would color red when you breathe it in
So I could see it coming
Look in my eyes when you say you love me
So I can see you lie to me
.
BONUS: Here’s another sneak release of the tracks on Sara’s upcoming album, Once Upon Another Time. This one’s called Stay, and just like Lie To Me, it brimming with emotion and soulful crooning. Bareilles is a beast.
